Cavanagh Open to Reverse-Flash Reprise

Tom Cavanagh, famed for his portrayal of Eobard Thawne, also known as Reverse-Flash, in The CW’s The Flash, has been lauded for his exemplary performance. Playing multiple versions of Harrison Wells, the actor is no stranger to dawning the yellow suit of DC villain Eobard Thawne. Cavanagh’s love for his role was evident when he recently voiced his interest in reprising it for James Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe.

Owing to viewer praise and a strong critical reception, The Flash was a massive success, ranking second in viewership on The CW. The series also clinched the People’s Choice Award for ‘Favorite New TV Drama’ in 2014. It comes as no surprise then, that Cavanagh expressed his willingness to step back into his character’s shoes, particularly under the direction of James Gunn.

Gunn’s Response to Cavanagh’s Interest

James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios and Guardians of the Galaxy director, was notified of a video capturing Cavanagh’s enthusiastic remarks at Toronto Comic-Con about playing Reverse-Flash again. Reacting on Threads, Gunn commented with a Face with Tears of Joy emoji, commonly known as the ‘crying laughing emoji’.

However, when fans mistakenly perceived his emoji response as a swipe at Cavanagh’s nine-year run as Reverse-Flash, the acclaimed director clarified, “Anyone responding to this thinking I’m laughing AT Tom obviously hasn’t watched the clip. He’s being hilarious. I’m acknowledging that.”

Grant Gustin’s Interest in Revisiting The Flash Role

In the aftermath of The Flash’s Season 9 conclusion, actor Grant Gustin, known for playing Barry Allen/The Flash, expressed his longing for the role. In a convention inquiry about reprising his role in the DC Universe under Gunn’s direction, Gustin stated, “Yeah, if James Gunn asked me, I would. I trust James Gunn. He hasn’t, for the record.”

Gunn has similarly expressed admiration for Gustin’s work, sharing on Threads that, “Grant is an incredibly talented guy, performing now on Broadway, I believe, and is absolutely not going to waste just because he’s not currently in a DC project…” He also hinted at the prospect of working with Gustin someday, saying, “…of course I’d love to work with him at some point.”

Upcoming Projects and DCU’s Future

Currently, Gunn and Peter Safran have several significant projects in the pipeline, including a Superman flick starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Yet, the acclaimed director remained quiet about the potential DC Universe involvement of both Tom Cavanagh and Grant Gustin.

As it stands, no official announcements have been made regarding the inclusion of The Flash or Reverse-Flash in the DC Universe. Meanwhile, both heroes have a rich legacy with nine seasons of The Flash currently available for streaming on Netflix alongside Ezra Miller’s The Flash on Max.

As DC fans continue to anticipate Gunn’s upcoming projects, hopes are high for the possibility of Cavanagh and Gustin’s reprisals, however unconfirmed at present. Only time will reveal the fates of these beloved characters in the unfolding narrative of the DC Universe.
