A Sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is coming soon.
12 years after the original was released, it has become one of the biggest independent films in movie history.
Now, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is being made into a feature film sequel. Nia Vardalos, who wrote the first production, has written the sequel and it will star John Corbett, her groom in the original romantic comedy. Also, expect the Portokalos family to return as well.
“Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story,” Vardalos said in a statement. “Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”
My Big Fat Greek Wedding centered around a young Greek-American woman’s trials and tribulations when she falls in love with a non-Greek and struggles to get her family to accept her fiance while she herself comes to terms with her heritage and cultural identity.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Vardalos has written the script for the project and will reprise the role of Toula Portokalos, a first-generation Greek-American woman. Corbett will play the non-Greek who fell in love with her in the original.
The plot involves the reveal of a family secret and a new wedding which brings the Greek clan back together again (the wedding is described as “bigger and fatter”).
According to Deadline, Rita Wilson will produce the production with Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. Gold Circle productions will have Paul Brooks executive producing alongside Scott Niemeyer, Norm Waitt, Steven Shareshian and Nia Vardalos.
