‘John Wick 4’ and ‘John Wick 5’ Are Coming Soon and Filming Back-To-Back

Date:

Keanu Reeves is returning to the John Wick franchise.

Lionsgate broke the news during their earnings call earlier this week, and fans are ecstatic to see the return of familiar faces like Ian McShane, who portrays Winston, the enigmatic manager of the Continental Hotel. The studio’s CEO, John Feltheimer, stated, “We’re also busy preparing scripts for the next two installments of our John Wick action franchise, with John Wick 4 slated to hit theatres Memorial Day weekend 2022. We hope to shoot both John Wick 4 and John Wick 5 back-to-back when Keanu becomes available early next year.”

This announcement should not come as a surprise—the John Wick franchise is a massive success, grossing over $500 million globally across the first three movies.

A new Starz ‘John Wick’ TV series, ‘The Continental’, is coming soon after the fourth movie. The show will be set in Los Angeles (not New York City, like the movies) and “maintain the urgency of the action along with the dry humor from the John Wick movies.”

Keanu Reeves is attached as a producer, and he’s expected to cameo at some point, while Chad Stahelski, who directed John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2, will helm the pilot; The Wire and Sons of Anarchy writer Chris Collins were hired as showrunner. The cast has yet to be announced.

“This series is truly unlike anything else on TV,” said Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht in a press release. “The Continental  promises to include the thunderous fight sequences and intensely staged shootouts between professional assassins and their targets that fans have come to expect in the John Wick movie franchise as well as introducing some new, darkly compelling characters who inhabit this underground world.”

The sequel, ‘John Wick 4’, is scheduled for May 27th release date. Currently, Keanu Reeves is shooting ‘Matrix 4’ for Warner Bros. in Berlin, Germany.

About ‘John Wick’:

“John Wick,” the American neo-noir action film series, has not only captivated audiences worldwide but also redefined the landscape of action cinema. Created by Derek Kolstad and spearheaded by Keanu Reeves as the titular character, the franchise has expanded into a global phenomenon since its inception in 2014.

Unveiling John Wick: The Saga Begins

John Wick (2014) introduced audiences to a retired assassin thrust back into the criminal underworld after the loss of his beloved wife and a subsequent attack by Russian gangsters. The simple act of stealing his car and killing his puppy, a last gift from his wife, unleashes Wick’s repressed fury, leading to a vengeful rampage that the action genre had rarely seen. The franchise continued with “John Wick: Chapter 2” (2017), “Chapter 3 – Parabellum” (2019), and “Chapter 4” (2023), each escalating in intensity and expanding the universe around Wick.

Expansion and Evolution of the Franchise

A Game-Changing Action Series

John Wick has been a game-changing series in the world of action cinema, with Laurence Fishburne portraying the Bowery King, a critical ally to John Wick. Created by Derek Kolstad and brought to life by Keanu Reeves, John Wick first captivated audiences in 2014. The series follows a retired hitman, John Wick, who re-enters the criminal underworld seeking vengeance for the death of his dog—a final gift from his late wife. This seemingly simple act of revenge set the tone for one of the most thrilling action sagas of the decade, blending emotional storytelling with intense, innovative action sequences.

Emotional Depth and Human Vulnerability

The character of John Wick resonated deeply with audiences because of his humanity, sense of loss, and unyielding determination. Unlike typical action heroes, Wick is portrayed as a man driven by grief, whose love for his late wife and loyalty to his dog reveal a vulnerability beneath his hardened exterior. This emotional depth is one of the key factors that set the John Wick franchise apart from other action films.

A Richly Crafted Underworld

Another distinguishing feature of the franchise is the unique world-building that Kolstad and the filmmakers have crafted. The John Wick universe is filled with a complex hierarchy of assassins, secret societies, and intricate codes of conduct. At the heart of this underworld lies the High Table—a shadowy council that governs the global network of assassins. The Continental Hotel, run by Ian McShane’s Winston, serves as a neutral ground where killers can find sanctuary, offering an intriguing glimpse into the organized nature of this clandestine society. The introduction of characters like the Bowery King, played by Laurence Fishburne, and new faces like Bill Skarsgård adds layers to the narrative, depicting the network of allies and rivalries that help define the stakes of Wick’s mission.

Innovative Action Choreography

From a stylistic perspective, John Wick redefined modern action cinema with its groundbreaking choreography and dedication to realism. Director Chad Stahelski, a former stuntman, brought his expertise to the franchise, creating fight scenes that are both visually stunning and technically impressive. The use of “gun-fu,” a seamless blend of martial arts and gunplay, has become synonymous with the John Wick name. Stahelski’s approach emphasizes fluid movement, precision, and physicality, making the action sequences not just a spectacle but an art form that raises the bar for the entire genre.

Influence on Popular Culture

The franchise’s influence on popular culture cannot be understated. The success of John Wick has inspired numerous other films to adopt similar styles, focusing on extended single-take action sequences, inventive combat choreography, and the emphasis on practical effects over computer-generated imagery. Keanu Reeves’ dedication to the role, which included extensive training in martial arts, firearms, and stunt driving, further contributed to the authenticity and appeal of the character. Reeves’ portrayal of Wick has cemented him as one of the most iconic action stars of the 21st century.

A Diverse Ensemble Cast

The series also introduced a captivating ensemble of supporting characters who have helped to enrich the story and expand the John Wick universe. Characters like Sofia, played by Halle Berry, and Zero, portrayed by Mark Dacascos, brought fresh dynamics and challenges to Wick’s journey, highlighting both the alliances and adversaries he encounters. Donnie Yen, a legendary martial artist, joins the cast in John Wick 4, promising even more thrilling action sequences that will push the boundaries of what audiences expect from the franchise. Each character’s backstory and motivations are intricately woven into the overarching narrative, creating a rich tapestry that extends beyond Wick’s personal vendetta.

Expanding the Mythos

As the franchise has progressed, it has continued to evolve, expanding its scope beyond the personal revenge story that started it all. The sequels have delved deeper into the mythos of the assassin world, exploring the rules, traditions, and power struggles within the High Table. This evolving narrative has kept audiences engaged, always revealing just enough about the world to keep them wanting more, while still maintaining an air of mystery. The John Wick films also spotlight the Continental Hotel as a critical hub of the assassin community, with its unique set of rules and enigmatic leader Winston, played by Ian McShane. These elements have played a significant role in expanding the intrigue of the John Wick universe.

Commercial Success and Critical Acclaim

The John Wick franchise has not only been a commercial success, grossing over $1 billion globally, but it has also garnered critical acclaim for its innovative approach to action storytelling. With John Wick: Chapter 5 already in development and various spin-offs, including The Continental TV series and John Wick Presents: Ballerina, the future of the franchise looks promising. The ongoing expansion of this universe, featuring prominent figures like Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, Bill Skarsgård, and Donnie Yen, ensures that the story of John Wick and his fight against the forces that seek to control him will continue to captivate audiences around the world.
