Original Aunt Viv Will Return to ‘Bel-Air’

Date:

The original Aunt Viv actresses will return in ‘Bel-Air’ in an upcoming guest-starring role.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which aired from 1990 to 1996 on NBC and was followed by a spin-off series in 2001, has so far avoided bringing in cameos from the original program. Smith serves as an executive producer for the show, but he has yet to make an appearance. All of that is about to change dramatically.

The streaming service Peacock announced official Fresh Prince cast members Daphne Maxwell Reid and Vernee Watson-Johnson will appear in the show’s ninth episode. Reid played Aunt Vivian Banks-Smith for the show’s first three seasons, while Watson-Johnson joined in the fourth and stayed until the series ended.

The episode is set to air on November 25th and will see the two actresses reunited with Smith. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Reid herself on Instagram. “I am so excited to announce that I am returning to my roots…and by roots, I mean The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. This is not a drill! I am guest starring on the show with my sista Vernee Watson-Johnson,” she wrote. “I can’t wait for you all to see it!”

About Fresh Prince of Bel-Air remake:

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is an American television sitcom that aired on NBC from September 10, 1990, to May 20, 1996. The show stars Will Smith as a fictionalized version of himself, a street-smart teenager from West Philadelphia who is sent to live with his wealthy relatives in the tony neighborhood of Bel-Air.

The show ran for six seasons and aired a total of 148 episodes. It has been praised for its portrayal of African Americans and has been noted for its influence on subsequent sitcoms.

In 2019, it was announced that a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air remake is in the works at Warner Bros. Television. The new series will be executive produced by Will Smith and Jeff Townes, with the latter also set to direct. It is unclear whether or not Smith will appear in the series.
