HBO and Issa Rae’s ‘RAP SH! T’ Trailer is finally here.
HBO Max has shared the official trailer of its upcoming original comedy series RAP SH!T, which is Insecure‘s Issa Rae’s first gig as an executive producer. Rae also wrote the first episode of the series.
The show stars Aida Osman as Shawna and Kamillion as Mia who reunite to form a high school rap group known as “Shawna’s Thoughts.”
This reunited pair is joined by Jonica Booth, Devon Terrel, and RJ Cyler as the main cast.
Rae has admitted in a Harper’s Bazaar interview that RAP SH!T was influenced by her Insecure script and that, “I think this is just such a unique time in hip-hop, especially when it comes to female rappers, because there’s such an abundance, and it doesn’t feel like they’re all in competition with each other. I’m a child of the ’90s, and there’s always a tendency to put two women against one another,” she adds. “It feels like we’re in an era where there’s such a supportive environment now because of that abundance. All of that, combined with just my own story of coming up, became the next story that I wanted to tell.”
In the same interview, Issa Rae says she drew inspiration from actual rappers like Cardi B, and the interconnectedness of their success with Social Media.
Watch the trailer for RAP SH!T and watch out for its premiere on 21st July.
