About HBO Max’s Winning Time:
Season 2 of ‘Winning Time’ Is In The Works.
HBO’s popular basketball series has already been renewed for a second year. How far back into the Lakers’ history will it explore?
The opening episode, directed by executive producer Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up, Anchorman), began with Magic Johnson learning he had HIV in 1991 and then flashed back to the ’80s before joining the team.

After the first season is completed, Winning Time will have plenty of opportunities to dive into basketball history. (And enough time to irritate the people it’s based on!) The first season of the boxing drama was well-received, earning a spot on HBO’s A-list and quickly renewed for a second. With its brightly lit cast of known figures and newcomers, it will almost certainly get some accolades of attention.
Is there a chance for a second season of Winning Time?
Yes, HBO has renewed Winning Time for a second season, which began airing in April 2021 after the first five episodes. Given the program’s attention and acclaim, it was not a surprise.
“It’s been a thrill to bring Winning Time to life with Adam McKay, Max Borenstein, our phenomenal producing team, and this incredible cast,” Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming, said in a statement at the time of the renewal. “This series not only tells the riveting story of the Lakers’ rise but is also a look back at a transformative era in basketball, celebrity, and the city of Los Angeles. We can’t wait to see how this team will tell the next chapter of this dynasty.”
When will Season 2 of Winning Time be available?
The premiere date for Season 2 of Winning Time is currently unknown. The quickness with which the renewal was made indicates that the show will return soon. A March 2023 release date would keep the series on track. HBO programs, particularly ones with large casts like Westworld or McKay’s other hit Succession, can take a while to resume after seasons.
Is there a Season 2 trailer for Winning Time?
Season 1 of Winning Time just wrapped, so there’s no trailer yet. It will be a while before we see a trailer because Season 2 hasn’t begun production yet. For the time being, you may use YouTube to construct your trailer with Lakers highlights.
Who from the cast is returning for Season 2 of Winning Time?
Given the importance of certain characters to the actual narrative, most of the Winning Time cast will be back for Season 2. It also means that John C. Reilly, who portrays team owner Jerry Buss, will be donning his aviator glasses and colorful duds again. Quincy Isaiah (Magic Johnson), Jason Clarke (Jerry West), Gaby Hoffman (Claire Rothman), Solomon Hughes (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), and Adrian Brody (Pat Riley) will all play more prominent roles. Expect more of Michael Chiklis’s Red Auerbach and the Celtics’ evil coach. That hatred grows with time, as even the most casual basketball fan can tell you.
Some characters from Season 1 may not be seen much in future seasons. At the end of Season 1, Jerry Buss’s mother, Jesse, passed away. Therefore Sally Field will most likely not appear in Season 2. Even though he was famous and had a long career, he will not be returning. After five seasons, the show is ending on HBO to focus on other projects. Tracy Letts, who played Coach Jack McKinney, has been reduced to a one-season role. Wood Harris, who played troubled Laker Spencer Haywood throughout all five seasons of the program, will probably be reduced to a recurring character because his storyline did not continue with the team. Similarly, They will most likely introduce new players during future seasons to play new squad members.
What will Season 2 of Winning Time be about?
Winning time can only deviate from history so much, according to some real-life figures shown on the show. After the first season, the Lakers clinched the national championship in 1980, laying the groundwork for future dynasty years. With Netflix’s The Crown, it has certain events that viewers will anticipate the show to address as it progresses through the era documented in the book on which it is based, Jeff Pearlman’s Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s. Read the book if you’re looking for “spoilers!”
In an in-depth conversation with Deadline, co-creator Max Borenstein spoke freely about his plans for the show, indicating that the writers will not take substantial time jumps to hurry up the narrative. “This next season is going to be, you know, taking the same pace that this first season did, roughly, to tell the next piece of the story,” he said when asked about Season 2. “Which involves Paul Westhead and Pat Riley, a struggle Magic has that next year, and Jerry West’s next step in the direction of becoming the general manager. There’s a lot of transitional stuff that starts to happen in that next season.”
It’s a big project. In a recent interview with New York Magazine, John C. Reilly expressed his doubts about the program’s future in vague terms.
“I’ve never played a character for this long in a movie or play, and it took a certain amount of emotional stamina to hold on to Jerry for ten episodes,” he said. “It’s above my pay scale whether HBO wants to get into the Shaq and Kobe era, but I’m only obligated to do another season of the show, and I haven’t even thought about whether I would want to keep doing it. Beyond that.”
Will Winning Time be able to continue for six or seven seasons? It’s certainly feasible—though as the series progresses, production costs and complexity may mount. Ask any Game of Thrones enthusiast. The Lakers’ narrative is nearly as intricate as George R.R Martin’s fantasy adventure. But at least there’s a conclusion that has been scripted.
