The iconic director behind ‘Avatar’ says the next installment could be the series finale.
Director James Cameron recently announced that he plans to continue the Avatar franchise, but only if the second installment is successful. The upcoming film, Avatar: The Way of Water, will determine whether or not the franchise continues.

If the second film is successful, Cameron has said the franchise would continue. While this may not be a complete surprise to some, it’s still reassuring to hear publicly from him about his plans. Right now, Cameron is relying on the second Avatar film doing well so that he can continue with the third and final film. In an exclusive conversation with Game Radar, Cameron confirmed that if the second film doesn’t perform as hoped at the box office, they will end the franchise with just three movies instead of continuing with Avatar 5 as initially planned.
He said, “The market could be telling us we’re done in three months, or we might be semi-done, meaning: ‘OK, let’s complete the story within movie three, and not go on endlessly,’ if it’s just not profitable.”
All four Avatar sequels have a reported budget of $1 billion. Cameron says, “We’re in a different world now than when I wrote this stuff, even. It’s the one-two punch – the pandemic and streaming. Or, conversely, maybe we’ll remind people what going to the theatre is all about. This film does that. The question is: how many people give a shit now?”
Cameron has a lot of experience with making sequels that audiences love, and he had some essential advice on how to make a successful second sequel. “To reconnect with the familiar that was fun and good, and that caused the first film to be a hit. But doing it in a way that’s unexpected, or that takes you someplace that’s unexpected.”
Cameron continues to bank for the threequel for Avatar, “At this point, we just have to play it out to see what happens. But what I know right now is: we’re delivering three hours of a pretty much insane experience.”
Avatar: The Way of Water will be in theaters on December 16, 2022.
