The 54-year-old actor revealed the harmful effects of starving himself while filming the 1997 film while speaking to Adam Sandler as part of Variety’s “Actors On Actors” series.

Although he finally achieved his goal appearance, the severe weight loss negatively impacted Fraser’s mental health.

“I was waxed. Starved of carbohydrates,” Fraser recalled. “I would drive home after work and stop to get something to eat.”

“I needed some cash one day, and I went to the ATM, and I couldn’t remember my PIN because my brain was misfiring. Banging on the thing. I didn’t eat that night,” he added.

Fraser said that, due to “no wardrobe” for his character, it was vital for him to achieve a muscular build through working out.

“You weren’t supposed to do that to us,” Sandler quipped. “You did right by the character. But you did wrong by us, man. You made us feel bad about ourselves.”

In the film, Fraser plays George- a man raised by apes in Africa. He falls in love with an American heiress, played by Leslie Mann, during her tour of Uganda. The hit film got a sequel made in 2003.

The movie made a lot of money, generating $180 million globally with a $55 million budget.

Recently, Fraser apologized to San Francisco motorists for the enormous traffic jam that stopped cars in their tracks while he was filming a scene for his new film. Fraser mentioned that the set, which resulted in mayhem on Oakland Bay Bridge stretching 8.4 miles, included his character scaling the bridge to save a parachutist. They used a dummy for this purpose.

But those worried onlookers thought it was a real person causing a traffic jam.

“Disney put a mannequin hanging by a parachute from the uprights. It brought traffic to a standstill on either side of the bridge,” The 53-year-old said to SFGate. “My trailer was on the other side in a parking lot. I just remember watching the… Bridge.”
