On Friday, a short teaser was released that featured Margot Robbie as the original Barbie, winking at an audience of little girls and then transitioning to a sparklier version.
Get ready to be awed by Helen Mirren’s narration that offers us a glimpse into the epic world of Barbie, where she breaks all traditional expectations! We also get tantalizingly brief looks at Ryan Gosling as Ken and Simu Liu Dancing.
For the first time ever, Barbie will be brought to life in a live-action movie directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), with a script from both Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, White Noise) and Gerwig. An amazing cast of actors and actresses are joining this production: Ryan Gosling, Liu Yifei, America Ferrera Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, Michael Cera Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell Nicola Coughlan – to name a few! Be sure not to miss out on this highly anticipated film.
After eight long years of development and several changes in casting, the role has been filled by Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway. Alethea Jones and Patty Jenkins were among those who expressed interest in directing this film along its journey.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Robbie shared that Warner Bros.’s latest film is set to defy all expectations. “We like the things that feel a little left of center,” the two-time Oscar nominee said. “Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted’…can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.”
This summer, get ready to be captivated by the adventure of Barbie as she races into theaters on July 21st, 2023!
