Hollywood Deep Fakes? Keanu Reeves Has a Plan

Date:

Keanu Reeves expressed his concerns about deep fakes, confirming that he has a clause in all of his film contracts prohibiting any digital edits from being made to his acting. He exclaimed incredulously, “They added a tear to my face! Huh?” emphasizing the scary potentials of such technology.

Keanu Reeves is filled with trepidation regarding his performances and the advancing deep fake technology. As anticipation builds for the release of “John Wick: Chapter 4,” Wired recently sat down with the film’s star for an exclusive interview” Reeved vehemently criticized the increasing presence of cutting-edge technology in Hollywood. “In the Matrix” and “John Wick” the actor announced that he includes a provision in each contract with studios to protect against any digital alteration of his performances.

“Yeah, digitally. I don’t mind if someone takes a blink out during an edit,” Reeves said. “But early on, in the early 2000s, or it might have been the ’90s, I had a performance change. They added a tear to my face, and I was like, ‘Huh?!’ It was like, I don’t even have to be here.”

“What’s frustrating about losing your agency,” Reeves expounded further on the topic of deep fakes. “When you perform in a film, you know you’ll be edited, but you’re participating. If you go into deep fake land, it has none of your points of view. That’s scary. It will be interesting to see how humans deal with these technologies. They have such cultural and sociological impacts, and the species is being studied. There’s so much ‘data’ on behaviors now.”

During a current dialogue, Reeves imparted that “The Matrix” having a 15-year-old puts things into an alarming light. The actor enlightened the adolescent that his role, Neo, is striving for what’s genuine. The teen sneered and uttered, “Who cares if it’s real?”

“People are growing up with these tools: We’re listening to music already made by AI in the style of Nirvana; there’s NFT digital art,” Reeves said. “It’s cool, like, Look what the cute machines can make! But a corporatocracy is behind it that’s looking to control those things. Culturally and socially, we will be confronted by the value of real or non-value. And then what’s going to be pushed on us? What’s going to be presented to us?”

“It’s this sensorium. It’s a spectacle. And it’s a system of control and manipulation,” Reeves continued. “We’re on our knees looking at cave walls and seeing the projections, and we do not have the chance to look behind us.”

“John Wick Chapter 4” opens in theaters on March 24 from Lionsgate.
