Warner Bros. Discovery is Taking Legal Action Over Paramount’s ‘South Park’ Streaming Rights

Date:

Warner Bros. Discovery is a name that continues to make headlines! The corporation is taking Paramount to court for an astounding sum of half a billion dollars over a breach of an exclusivity contract. Warner Bros. Discovery has officially accused its competition of breaking the contract with HBO Max by broadcasting South Park on their streaming service, Paramount+.

Paramount-owned Comedy Central typically premieres new South Park episodes. Last year, Paramount and the show’s creators held an auction to make streaming rights of 23 existing seasons plus three recent 10-episode seasons available on HBO Max. Before the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, Warner Media sealed a lucrative agreement worth almost USD 1.7 million for exclusive rights to each online South Park episode. Unfortunately, the pandemic caused production to come to a grinding halt.

In March 2021, a lawsuit was brought against Paramount, MTV, and South Park Digital Studios, alleging that they “planned to divert as much of the new South Park content as possible to Paramount+ to boost that nascent streaming platform.” To this day, the company has reported that it purchased 30 new episodes through three distinct seasons; however, they have only received 14 of them. In a statement, HBO Max declared, “We believe that Paramount and South Park Digital Studios embarked on a multi-year scheme of unfair trade practices and deception, flagrantly and repeatedly breaching our contract, which gave HBO Max exclusive streaming rights to the existing library and new content from the popular animated comedy South Park.”

In response to inquiries, a spokesperson from Paramount Global issued the following statement: “continues to adhere to the parties’ contract by delivering new South Park episodes to HBO Max, even though Warner Bros. Discovery has failed and refused to pay license fees that it owes to Paramount for episodes that have already been delivered, and which HBO Max continues to stream.”

Ant-Man 3 has experienced Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most significant box office slump ever.
