Get ready to get spooked! Peacock has just given Good Fear and the Dungeons & Dragons duo a straight-to-series order for their Satanic Panic Thriller. Prepare yourself for a thrilling experience that will make your spine tingle with anticipation.
Peacock has granted an immediate series order for Hysteria!, a satanic panic-themed thriller centered on coming of age. The show is created by Matthew Scott Kane with executive producers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, Chris Bender, and Jake Weiner from Good Fear (My Spy, Mulan), along with UCP–a subdivision of Universal Studio Group.
They were written and masterminded by Kane, Hysteria! Delves deep into the disquieting past of American mass hysteria through the unflinching narrative of a teenage Satanic Panic. This series captures the wild, thrilling journey of a ragtag group of 1980s high school outcasts as they take advantage of the rampant mania surrounding teen occult practices.
Set during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, Hysteria! Follows a struggling high school metal band who take advantage of their town’s newfound interest in all things occult by crafting an image as Satanic musicians. But when strange occurrences such as kidnappings and mysterious deaths begin, these outcasts find themselves at the center of a witch hunt that could lead directly back to them—and cost them everything they have worked for.
Hysteria! shares striking similarities with Netflix’s Stranger Things, from its 1980s, setting to the band of misfits at its center.
Daley and Goldstein will play a lead role in executive producing and directing, while Bender and Weiner join them as executive producers for Good Fear. Scott Stoops rounds out the production team with his overseeing position, all under UCP’s studio banner.
After creating the spec pilot and series pitch with Kane, Good Fear happily welcomed Goldstein and Daley on board as directors/producers due to their long-term relationship history with Bender and Weiner.
During the 1980s, a phenomenon known as the “Satanic Panic” spread across America with thousands of unfounded accusations concerning Satanic ritual abuse. This hysteria eventually reached all corners of the globe by the late 1990s and continues to linger today. The claims usually revolved around accounts of physical and sexual maltreatment during occult or Satanic practices.
“Our upcoming thriller series Hysteria! Will explore the complex world of the Satanic Panic, set amidst ‘80s nostalgia, mystery, heavy metal, and an all-American setting,” Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, declared. “We’re excited to partner on this fresh, coming-of-age story led by writer Matthew Scott Kane, executive producers and directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, Good Fear, and our partners at UCP for what will surely be a compelling original series for Peacock viewers.”
“This nail-biting thriller dives into a mass moral panic and all the fears, desires, anger, and dread that led to these dark days,” Beatrice Springborn, President of UCP, eagerly declared. “Matthew’s script is original, intriguing and perfectly captures the frenetic energy of the Satanic Panic. We can’t wait for audiences to experience the show on Peacock.”
Represented by A3 Artists Agency and Good Fear Content, Kane’s career is on the rise.
