Disappointing Debut Box Office Results for ‘The Flash’ with $55 Million
Warner Bros.’s latest release, ‘The Flash,’ has left much to be desired regarding box office success, potentially signaling a troubling trend for the studio. Starring Ezra Miller, the film faced off against Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ in its opening weekend, outperforming its competitor but falling short of already modest expectations.
‘The Flash’ debuted with $55 million USD, while ‘Elemental’ secured $29.5 million USD at the box office. Despite both films having substantial budgets, with Warner Bros. investing $200 million in production costs and an additional $100 million in marketing expenses, the theatrical release failed to meet anticipated levels of success. Before the DC film’s release, ‘The Flash’ underwent an extensive marketing campaign to position it as “one of the greatest superhero movies ever made,” according to DC Studios’ new co-chief, James Gunn. Directed by Andy Muschietti, the film follows the storyline of Barry Allen, portrayed by Ezra Miller, as he travels back in time to prevent his mother’s murder, inadvertently unlocking the DC multiverse.
Internationally, ‘The Flash’ also struggled, generating $75 million USD across 78 markets and resulting in a global revenue of $139 million USD. As the second of four DC films set to debut in 2023, the movie’s lackluster performance raises concerns as Warner Bros., under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran, looks to steer the comic book universe in an entirely new direction.
