Netflix has made a significant acquisition by obtaining the worldwide distribution rights for the top-rated Taiwanese horror comedy, ‘Marry My Dead Body.’ The film is set to premiere on the streaming platform on August 10, catering to a global audience.
‘Marry My Dead Body’ has taken Taiwan by storm since its release in February, successfully incorporating elements of fantasy, supernaturalism, LGBTQ issues, and the Chinese tradition of “ghost marriage.” Garnering a remarkable box office revenue of $11.5 million (NTD 360 million), it dominated the Chinese-language film landscape in the first half of 2023. The movie’s exceptional screenplay was honored with the Best Screenplay Award at the 25th Taipei Film Festival, further solidifying its status. In addition to this accolade, ‘Marry My Dead Body’ received nominations for Best Actor and Best Visual Effects.
Directed by Cheng Wei-hao, the film revolves around the character of Wu Ming-Han (portrayed by Hsu Kuang Han), a heterosexual police officer who deeply fears ghosts and harbors homophobic views. Fate turns unexpectedly when he unknowingly becomes entangled in the Chinese tradition of a ghost marriage after accidentally acquiring a mysterious red envelope. Forced to marry Mao Pang-Yu (played by Austin Lin), a person who met an untimely demise under puzzling circumstances, the unlikely duo must set aside their differences and work together to solve a perplexing case. Their journey intertwines humor, tear-inducing moments, and ludicrous scenarios, ultimately seeking justice for Mao. Joining the cast is Gingle Wang, who portrays a policewoman in the film.
‘Marry My Dead Body’ was brought to life by Calendar Studios and debuted at the esteemed Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival in November. Its subsequent success and critical acclaim have paved the way for its much-anticipated international release on Netflix.
