The Controversy, The Test Groups and the Footage of Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Noah’ Starring Russell Crowe

Date:

Producers have released the first footage from Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, the controversial feature film starring Russell Crowe.

Aronofsky has been able to produce some amazing motion pictures. For example, Requiem for a Dream was a 2000 American drama film directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, and Marlon Wayans. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Hubert Selby, Jr., with whom Aronofsky wrote the screenplay. Ellen Burstyn was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance. The film was screened out of competition] at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival for the motion picture. He also followed up this early success with The Wrestler and Black Swan, but the latest motion picture Noah has created some controversy. Aranofsky and Paramound Productions have been reportedly arguing over the final version of the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the ongoing process of showing different versions of the film to three test crowds. A Jewish, Christian and general public test audience. But all reported mix reactions.

In recent weeks, the studio has held test screenings for key groups that might take a strong interest in the subject matter: in New York (for a largely Jewish audience), in Arizona (Christians) and in Orange County, Calif. (general public). All are said to have generated troubling reactions. But sources say Aronofsky has been resistant to Paramount’s suggested changes. “Darren is not made for studio films,” says a talent rep with ties to the project. “He’s very dismissive. He doesn’t care about [Paramount’s] opinion.”
