Goonies is a cult classic. It started the careers of several young actors including Josh Brolin and Corey Feldman.
Now it is reported that the original director of the series, Richard Donner, wants to create a sequel to the hit movie.
Donner recently spoke with TMZ that a “Goonies” sequel is still in the works. But, according to TheWrap, talk is pretty cheap.
As great as “The Goonies” was and still is, the film is one example of ’80s childhood nostalgia that Hollywood doesn’t need to revisit, since the cult classic simply cannot be improved upon. Corey Feldman doesn’t belong anywhere near a big screen these days and Josh Brolin probably has bigger fish to fry as well.
So while Sean Astin may be willing to “bet his children” on a sequel, as he told IGN last year, this reporter would wager his own non-existent kids that “Goonies 2” is no more likely to happen than “Titanic 2.”
It seems pretty tragic that filmmakers and actors hold on to their previous successes in Hollywood and hope for a sequel. This time, Warner Bros. politely declined Richard Donner’s assertions.
