MLB is a Dying Sport, Nobody is Watching the World Series

Date:

Very few people are watching the MLB championship series.

The start to the World Series is at an all time low for Tuesday’s game. According to reports, the Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants game had only 12.19 million viewers.

Many people blame the low ratings on the teams that are playing in the World Series. Since Kansas City is a small market and the Giants have appeared in the World Series three times in the past five years.

In a seven game series we can expect to see the ratings to increase over time. The least-watched World Series game ever occurred during the 2008 World Series where only 9.8 million viewers watched the game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays.

Overall, fewer people are interested in the sport than ever before. According to the Wall Street Journal, fewer kids are interested in watching baseball. Nielsen reports the average baseball fan is around 56 years old and it’s increasing every year. The biggest worry for the MLB:

This isn’t good. Executives know that if kids attend games, stay up late to catch the last out of the World Series and play baseball, they are far more likely to follow the game as adults and pass the habit on to their children.

Baseball is a dying sport.
