The Hunger Games franchise is one of the biggest series to ever hit Hollywood. With reports claiming that the new Mockingjay – Part 1 made over 50 million dollars opening weekend, fans all over the world are joining in to see what will happen to Katniss Everdeen.

The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 continues to follow Katniss Everdeen. After, surviving the Hunger Games twice, Katniss finds herself in District 13. Under the leadership of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss reluctantly becomes the symbol of a mass rebellion against the Capitol and fights to save Peeta and a nation moved by her courage.

The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland. It is the sequel to The Hunger Games: Catching Fireand will be followed by the concluding entry, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

But, before Jennifer Lawrence landed the role of a lifetime and before, Josh Hutcherson ever became Peeta, dozens of aspiring actors auditioned for the lead roles in The Hunger Games. 

According to The Wrap, here are 5 popular actors that auditioned for lead roles in The Hunger Games but eventually lost.

1. Shailene Woodley

Before ever becoming Beatrice “Tris” Prior, in The Divergent Series based on the best-selling series of novels by author Veronica Roth, and before ever becoming Hazel Grace Lancaster in The Fault in Our Stars, based on the novel of the same name by John Green, Shailene Woodley auditioned for the role of Katniss Everdeen. According to The Wrap, “She must have impressed Lionsgate execs during her Katniss auditions because they cast the actress as the lead in their next big YA franchise, “Divergent.”

2. Grant Gustin

Grant Gustin is known for his roles as Sebastian Smythe on the Fox series Glee and as Barry Allen/The Flash on the CW series Arrow and The Flash. But, before he ever landed a show on the CW network, Gustin auditioned for the leading role of Finnick Odair in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” The role ended up going to Sam Claflin, a year later, but now the actor is working on  one of the most popular TV series on the CW network.

3. Evan Peters

Evan Peters is known for his roles on American Horror Story and playing superhero Quicksilver in “X-Men: Days of Future Past” but, the actor also auditioned for Josh Hutcherson’s role of Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games. According to reports, the actor tested alongside Jennifer Lawrence in the movie but, producers, casting directors, and executives believed Josh Hutcherson was a better fit for Jennifer Lawrence.

4. Mia Wasikowska

Mia Wasikowska gained worldwide prominence in 2010 after starring as Alice in Tim Burton’s $1 billion-grossing Alice in Wonderland and appearing in The Kids Are All Right, a role for which she received the Hollywood Awards’ Breakthrough Actress Award. After working on the Tim Burton hit feature film, the actress was extremely popular in Hollywood. Casting directors listed her as a possibility to play Johanna Mason in “The Hunger games: Catching Fire”. But, the role would eventually go to Jena Malone.

5. Chloe Moretz

Chloe Moretz is most known for such movies as  (500) Days of Summer, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Kick-Ass, Let Me In, Hugo, Dark Shadows, Carrie, If I Stay and The Equalizer.  Chlore Moretz told the LA Times that “I’d die to play Katniss. It’s such a cool role.” The actress is currently in Atlanta, Georgia working on the alien franchise thriller, “The 5th Wave”, based on the bestselling books by Rick Yancey.
