Mockingjay Part 1 has the worst opening and rating in Hunger Games Franchise history.
Katniss Everdeen reunited with the cast and crew for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 this weekend, and the movie made nearly $123 million domestically and $275 million worldwide. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 had the highest domestic opening of 2014 beating out Transformers 4 which made $100million. In addition, the Hunger Games franchise opened with three consecutive $100 million openings in a row. However, studio executives are calling The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 disappointment:
Mockingjay‘s debut doesn’t compare favorably to the other movies in the Hunger Games franchise, though: it’s down 22 percent from Catching Fire‘s $158 million, and is also significantly lower than the original movie’s $152 million. More surprising is the fact that Mockingjay wound up lower than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1′s $125 million and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1‘s $138 million. [BoxOfficeMojo]
At the same extent, many people call The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 the worst movie in the Hunger Games franchise.
In terms of demographics, Lionsgate said Mockingjay played in line with Catching Fire, with females making up 60 percent of the audience, while 52 percent of ticket buyers were under the age of 25.
Mockingjay — Part 1 also earned mixed reviews, and audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore, compared to an A for the previous two installments. [HollywoodReporter]
Many people blame the low box office earnings on the fact that movie studios enjoy splitting the final movie into two parts. However, the Hunger Games were able to make $275 million out of the first half of the book. You can say that The Hunger Games saw a 22% drop in revenue. However, you can also say that The Hunger Games Mockingjay made a ton of money on half of a movie.
The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland. It is the sequel to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and will be followed by the concluding entry, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.
The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 continues to follow Katniss Everdeen. After, surviving the Hunger Games twice, Katniss finds herself in District 13. Under the leadership of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss reluctantly becomes the symbol of a mass rebellion against the Capitol and fights to save Peeta and a nation moved by her courage.
