Are the Golden Globes a real award ceremony? Probably not, here is how the Golden Globes is run by a powerful group of nobodies.
In an award show that features mostly fancy dresses, and pop culture buzz words, It is interesting to note how much power the group of 100 fairly random people possess. They are typically buried in free gifts, trips to Las Vegas, occasional bribes in exchange for their votes and a chance to hang out with celebrities.

The HFPA keeps membership below 100, making it easer for movie studios and celebrities to bribe judges with private movie screenings, one-on-one celebrity interviews, and amazing dinners. Judges are also given all-expenses-paid trips per year to film festivals anywhere in the world for each and every member.
It is important to note that the in 1943, the HFPA was created by eight foreign journalists living in Hollywood, who were upset by their lack of access to A-List actors. They believe that by creating their own awards ceremony things would change, and that line of reasoning paid off.

From the Toronto Star, here is how the Golden Globes chooses their judges:
Current Hollywood Foreign Press Association members include real-estate agents, car salesmen, showbiz publicists, hairdressers and even a few journalists. All that is required to maintain membership is permanent residence in Southern California (so much for “foreign”) and a mere four published articles per year, often in obscure publications that aren’t freely disclosed.
The HFPA pretends to be a democratic operation, but it operates mainly in the dark, revealing only the names and the 55 countries represented by its members. (There are four Canadian members, one of whom, Ray Arco, also represents Denmark.)
Essentially NBC is buying an award ceremony that is presented as a serious film and TV awards, but the credentials of the judges are often sketchy at best.
A compliment is only as good as the person it comes from, the golden globes is not much of an award but more of a prize you can win at your local Chuck E. Cheese
