Eddie Murphy is returning to Saturday Night Live for the first time in over thirty years.
The last time Eddie Murphy worked on Saturday Night Live, it was on February 25, 1984 and his career was skyrocketing. At that point in time he had several hit movies including Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, and Eddie Murphy Raw.
In the past, Eddie Murphy said that he quit the show because “They said some shitty things. There was that David Spade sketch. I made a stink about it, it became part of the folklore. What really irritated me about it at the time was that it was a career shot.” But, it looks like that is water under the bridge because he’s been confirmed to attend SNL’s 40th anniversary special, which airs February 15th.
Murphy revealed the news during a phone interview with News One when asked about why he’s never returned to the show since leaving in 1984: “It’s just timing. It just never worked out where the timing was right for me to do it…They’re actually having a 40th anniversary I think in two weeks. I’m going to that, and that’ll be the first time I’ve been back since I left.” (Via)
It has been a while since Eddie Murphy worked on anything comedy related. In an interview with Kevin Hart in Jerry Seinfeld web series Comedians in Cars, Hart explained that Eddie Murphy was afraid that if he did return to comedy that he would not be as funny as people remember him. Eddie Murphy also revealed that he is concentrating on making more serious movies. Murphy’s latest project is with the director of Driving Ms. Daisy, the movie that launched the career of Morgan Freeman. The upcoming feature film was written by Californiacation writer Susan McMartin and is based on the true story of McMartin’s stepfather’s personal cook, who had an impact on her life.
Perhaps this is the start of a beautiful comeback!
