Rockstar Games is Pissed with BBC Over the ‘Grand Theft Auto’ Movie

Date:

Rockstar Games is suing to stop the BBC movie about ‘Grand Theft Auto’.

A few weeks ago BBC announced that Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe will star in the feature film. But, now the ‘Grand Theft Auto’ movie has ran into a real problem.

According to IGN, Rockstar is taking the BBC to court to shut down the movie. THe basis is that the BBC is infringing on Rockstar’s trademarks by using terms like “Grand Theft Auto,” but if you can read between the lines you can see the real issue here:

Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC’s pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games.

Basically, they’re worried they are going to look bad. ‘Jacked,’ the book the movie is based on, is pretty entertaining book, but Rockstar isn’t the friendliest kid in the park. That being said, there’s probably not much Rockstar can do legally. The events in question happened publicly, something Rockstar knows.

Either BBC will just not mention the game, or we’re going to see a long drawn out legal battle of schematics. Either way, expect to see a BBC parody pop-up in the next Rockstar game.
