Netflix CEO defends Adam Sandler in a press conference saying he’s an “international star.”
Adam Sandler used to be the man. Everything he touched turned into comedic magic. However, in Hollywood you are only as good as your last movie and Adam Sandler is looking bad…real bad. Adam Sandler’s ‘Pixels’ had a very weak debut and it is easily added to the list of recent box office disappointments for the comedian.
But, Ted Sarandos told reporters that he still stands behind Adam Sandler calling Sandler an “international star.”
“[Pixels] did $24 million domestically, $25 million internationally, and a third of our subscribers are outside of the U.S.,” said Sarandos during an appearance at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “That’s why we made a deal with Adam Sandler, because he’s an enormous international movie star. That $25 million opening for Pixels is pretty respectable, and I think it will continue to grow.”
Netflix CEO may be reaching her. Adam Sandler’s movies have not done that well internationally. ‘Blended’ bombed domestically with $46.3 million in the US and earning slightly higher internationally with $80.5 million.
It will be interesting to see if ‘The Ridiculous 6‘ movie, which several Native Americans actors complained about the movie for being extremely racist, will shake things up for Adam Sandler’s career. Otherwise, Netflix will have to depend on ‘The Do Over,’ which is currently filming in Savannah, Georgia.
