Pixar’s Animation Studios sequel, ‘Toy Story 4’ plot will be a standalone romantic comedy movie.
Back in 2013, Pixar Animation Studios Presiden Edwin Catmull announced that the studio will try to release “an original film a year,” on average. So far Pixar has been working hard on that promise. Pixar is currently has ‘Inside Out’ and ‘The Good Dinosaur,’ which is expected to hit theaters by November 2015.
One of those Pixar sequels is ‘Toy Story 4,’ a project that surprised many people when it was officially announced in late 2014. Not because ‘Toy Story 3’ was a commercial success, but because the third ‘Toy Story’ movie provided what many believed to be the perfect ending to the ‘Toy Story’ franchise. However, ‘Toy Story 4’ is being described as more of a standalone movie that is set in a cartoon universe.
Pixar general manager Jim Morris described ‘Toy Stor 4’ as a being a “love story” and “romantic comedy”, but refrained from leaking any other details beyond that. However, on the first day of the 2014 D23 Expo, Pixar Chief Creative Office John Lasseter – who is co-directing ‘Toy Story 4’ with Josh Cooley – clarified which characters that love story will involve, as he told the press. “It’s a love story with Woody and—and this is news—Bo Peep.”
Woody, who is voiced by Tom Hanks, and Bo Peep, who is voiced by Annie Potts, were in a romantic relationship in the first two ‘Toy Story’ movies, but in ‘Toy Story 3′ it was implied that Bo had been sold by the Toys’ owners at some point between Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3. The new ‘Toy Story 4’ screenplay from Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, will presumably explore what happens when, Woody and the gang (who now belong to young Bonnie Anderson) are reunited with Bo Peep, giving Woody and Bo a chance to rekindle their connection.
The top-grossing film on its opening weekend, Toy Story went on to earn over $361 million worldwide. Reviews of ‘Toy Story’ were positive, praising both the animation’s technical innovation and the screenplay’s wit and sophistication, and it is now widely considered by many critics to be one of the best animated films ever made. The film received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”, as well as winning a Special Achievement Academy Award.
Toy Story 4 opens in U.S. theaters on June 16th, 2017.
