STUDY: Fox Finally Earns “Excellent” Grade by GLAAD

Date:

Before Bruce Jenner transitioned to Caitlyn Jenner, TV networks were increasing diversity on television.

Nowadays, there is a rising number of rising LGBT characters on TV. According to a GLAAD TV study, Fox is the first TV series to receive a “excellent” grade.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s 9th annual “Network Responsibility Index” report gave several different grades to TV shows for the amount of LGBT characters on television series. GLAAD gave shows like Pretty Little Liars and The Fosters, its third excellent grade. But, for the first time Fox and the study shows made a major improvement since their 2006 failing grade.

“The network’s progress is a testament to intentional efforts towards inclusion and the evolution of the TV landscape on the whole,” the GLAAD report stated. The NRI report charted the quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBT representation on network TV shows that aired between June 2014 and May 2015.

GLAAD said ABC Family posted the highest-ever percentage of LGBT-inclusive programming for any network in the NRI surveys at 74 percent of its original programming. GLAAD also gave “good” grades to ABC, The CW, FX, HBO, MTV, Showtime, “adequate” grades to CBS, NBC, TLC, TNT, USA, and “failing grades to A&E and History.

The study also reported that The CW led in racial diversity of its LGBT characters and ABC offered the hight volume of LGBT-inclusive content. GLAAD also reported that LGBT representation is rising on US TV shows, and now the group is advocating an increase in diversity of characters portrayed.
