[GERI] African American, in her 30s, Geri is the patient, no-nonsense girlfriend of Byrd. She puts up with Darcy’s harder edges out of sympathy for and loyalty to Byrd. Geri understands that Darcy has had a hard time coming to terms with her son’s death, but also knows that living in the past can be detrimental to shaping one’s future. Geri works at the University (of Georgia), and agrees to help Darcy get an application in past the deadline…SUPPORTING.

[KEVIN JENKINS] A balding businessman in his mid 30s, Kevin Jenkins is a successful accountant and proud father of soon to be 5 sons. After running into Darcy at the super market, Kevin is forced to recollect old memories of his college friend Walker, who committed suicide before graduating. Unsettled by Darcy’s persistence and unwilling to discuss the past, Kevin does his best to fend her off, but once she tracks him down in his workplace he explains everything he can remember about the day Walker died…SUPPORTING. Caucasian. From Georgia. Lives in Birmingham, AL.

[MARK WRIGHT] In his mid 30s, amped up and confident, Mark Wright is a successful franchiser with a persistent coke habit he picked up in college. Once Walker’s close friend, Mark now runs a restaurant franchise that is eerily similar to the one Walker detailed in a business plan that he wrote before his suicide. When Mark is approached by a gun-toting Darcy, his controlled facade disappears, and we see the insecure man beneath the phony smile…SUPPORTING. Open to all ethnic backgrounds. Lives and works in New Orleans.

[DENNIS] 34, hides out alone in the Victorian rental house he’s inhabited since college, growing pot and sporting long, blond dreadlocks. (Deadlocks not a must). Darcy finds Dennis relatively unchanged since back when he and Walker were friends, maybe a touch more paranoid. He’s a little uncomfortable talking about the past, but does his best to explain to Darcy what happened the day of Walker’s suicide…4 speeches & 16 lines, 3 scenes. Caucasian. Lives in Georgia.

[PROFESSOR LATSON] An anthropology professor in his late 30s/early 40s, Professor Latson is Darcy’s direct but understanding boss. Lately he’s been frustrated with Darcy’s erratic behavior, but has the decency to let her miss a few days and take care of her personal matters, because often he sees in Darcy more potential than she sees in herself…3 speeches & 8 lines, 3 scenes. Open to all ethnic backgrounds. Lives in Georgia.

[BUFORD LAPIERRE] In his mid 30s, stout, and with a shock of white hair but the face of a younger man, Buford (Louisiana Cajun) is an old “friend” of Darcy’s son, Walker. Buford always existed on the outer edge of the circle of college friends. So when Darcy finds him in flooded bayou country and starts asking him pointed questions, he’s a little more preoccupied with taking care of his family and has to be pushed to talk about Walker, but what he reveals helps Darcy take another pivotal step on her path…7 speeches & 5 lines, 2 scenes. Caucasian.

[BETH] In her mid 30s and heavily pregnant (can be faked), Beth is Kevin Jenkins’ wife. After running into Darcy at the grocery store, she pleasantly introduces herself and offers her condolences regarding Darcy’s son…1 speech & 3 lines, 1 scene. Caucasian. Lives in Georgia.

[WAITRESS] Working at a truck stop diner, this waitress serves Darcy and Byrd their lunch. Small town Louisiana. She joins a conversation about the unfair water restrictions…2 speeches & 1 line, 2 scenes. Open to all ethnic backgrounds.

[SAM] In his 60s/70s, bald, Sam is Darcy’s next-door neighbor and lives in a rental cottage behind her house. He sneaks out in the middle of the night to water his plants, just like the rest of the neighborhood does…1 speech & 2 lines, 2 scenes (1) Open to all ethnic backgrounds. Lives in Georgia.

[SUE ANN JENKINS] Sue Ann Jenkins, 50s, is Kevin Jenkins’ conservative, more staid mother, living in an upscale home. She hesitantly greets Darcy at her front door, and is not all that pleased to see her, or to help her out…4 lines, 1 scene. Caucasian.

[RECEPTIONIST (2)] In her early 20s wearing too much makeup, this receptionist works at the “Dawg House” offices in New Orleans, and greets Darcy when she arrives for a visit…5 lines, 1 scene. Open to all ethnic backgrounds.

[GUY 1 AND GUY 2] This gruff trucker discusses the unfair water restrictions that have been hurting local towns (small town Louisiana)…3 lines, 1 scene. Suggest for GUY 1 only – we will have candidates read for both GUY 1 and GUY 2 most likely. Should look like a trucker. Open to all ethnic backgrounds and ages.

[WES SANFORD] An elderly man of about 70 with white hair and a glazed look in his eye, Wes Sanford is Darcy’s ex-husband, now living in a nursing home. He’s paid a visit by Darcy who speaks her mind without a response from Wes…1 line, 1 scene. Caucasian. Lives in Jackson, MS

[OFFICE ASSISTANT] This office assistant in her 20s, wearing conservative work clothes, and greets Darcy and Byrd when they arrive to pay Kevin a visit…2 lines, 1 scene. Open to all ethnic backgrounds.

[RECEPTIONIST] This pleasant receptionist checks Darcy in for a visit at the nursing home in Jackson, MS…1 speech, 1 scene. Open to all ethnic backgrounds.

[MAN ON STREET] This helpful African American man gives Darcy directions in New Orleans…2 lines, 1 scene. Late 20s to 60s.
