Producers fire Will Smith as plans for a new ‘Men in Black’ franchise is on the way.
Men in Black is heading back to theaters for at least another three more movies. However, Will Smith will likely have nothing to do with any of them. The movie’s producers pretty much confirmed Sony’s rumored reboot plans during a recent Toronto International Film Festival interview, though the details of the three-part reboot might be a major deal breaker for some fans.
You produced Men in Black. Has there been talk of reviving that franchise with the new Sony regime?
Walter Parkes: We’re in the middle of it. It’s very active.
Is Will Smith going to be part of it?
Parkes: Most likely no.
Laurie MacDonald: It will be reinvented as a trilogy.
That is a major bummer. But, on the bright side, three more Men in Black movies are on the way. Parkes and MacDonald dropped this bombshell during a talk with Hollywood Reporter, thanks to their new movie He Named Me Malala. Will Smith’s acting career has pretty much skyrocketed since working on Men in Black. His most recent motion picture, Concussion is stirring up controversy throughout the NFL and his new superhero movie Suicide Squad has comic fans anxious in anticipation.
According to reports, it is unclear whether this trilogy will have anything to do with the upcoming 21 Jump Street Men in Black crossover. But, as long as there is a neuralyzer and the “cricket” to save the day, everything will be okay in the world of sci-fi.
