Is #NoBraDay a real holiday or is a huge hoax? You may be going bra less for no reason.
Today is National No Bra Day as part of efforts to promote the October 1-31 Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
What is #NoBraDay?
The National No Bra Day is an annual holiday reportedly created four years ago by breast cancer advocates to commemorate the October Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to serve as a reminder for all women to be screened for breast cancer.
For survivors and family members of cancer survivors, it is a day meant to promote breast cancer awareness and to help raise money for Breast Cancer research.
Is #NoBraDay an actual breast cancer awareness campaign?
However, #NoBraDay follows in the footsteps of the Ice Bucket Challenge and the no make-up selfie challenge by encourage social media users to get in on the act for a good cause.
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, the hashtag is meant to inspire and motivate others to stop wearing a bra for a day and go commando.
Where it differs from other challenges is how exploitative it is to women. Plus it’s unclear what the actual goal of going bra-less is.
There is no mention of fund-raising or backing by any breast cancer charities and sparse information on self-examination.
According to Mirror, the Cancer Research UK admitted it did not know that #NoBraDay existed or if any cancer charities supported it.
In fact, many believe that they are using Breast Cancer awareness in order to take advantage of women.
Should you go braless for #NoBraDay?
Women know the challenges that come with not wearing a bra. For one thing, people can judge women and therefore, slut-shamed, but a 2013 French study has shown that there are many advantages to wearing a bra.
“Medically, physiologically, anatomically – breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity. On the contrary, they get saggier with a bra,” said Jean-Denis Rouillon, a professor at the University of Besançon in France, according to The Local.
However, for many women, going braless is a matter of personal choice and there’s a proper time and place for this. “For example, wearing a thin shirt with no bra in a court room would not be appropriate. I think a good rule of thumb would be if the guys are expected to wear suits than the ladies should be wearing bras,” said one commenter on Reddit’s Ask Women section.
Overall…
In June, the #HoldACokeWithYourBoobsChallenge came under fire for duping hundreds of women into posting sexually suggestive pictures of themselves online.
Originally started to poke fun at the Ice Bucket Challenge and no make-up selfie started, it escalated, with millions of people believing it was for charity.
As for No Bra Day, for the most part it seems like women are finding new and innovative ways to find support for breast cancer awareness but, it may just be a huge scam for creepy perverts.
