Samuel L. Jackson just bashed the latest Star Wars movie.

Despite breaking box office records nearly every day this week, inspiring fans to see it several times, and earning nearly a 100% positive reviews, and now that the initial hype is over, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been found to become the center of controversy.

Samuel L. Jackson played Jedi Master Mace Windu in several Star Wars movies and when he sat down with Peter Travers to talk about his new movie The Hateful Eight, Quentin Tarantino’s Western, the subject of Star Wars popped up. When asked about his thoughts on the new movie, Jackson was clearly diplomatic in his word choice but, he said: “I think the kids need to go to lightsaber fight school, but… that’s just me thinking out. They got time to get better.”

But, Samuel L. Jackson is not alone. Many people believed the light saber fights in George Lucas movies were more intense and featured more skill. While Jackson is right about the lack of lightsaber action, there is a good reason for the differences.

During the time of the prequels, Jedis were everywhere and they trained in the ways of using the Force. By the time we saw any of them fighting, they have been using lightsabers for nearly their entire life.

While in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rey obviously had some combat skill of her own, but lacked any real training.

While we don’t know exactly what to expect from Star Wars moving forward, now that Rey has found Luke Skywalker, many assume that she’ll wind up getting some additional training with a lightsaber, among other things. So she most likely will essentially go back to lightsaber school.
