Jim Carrey responds to the accusations and lawsuit over his ex-girlfriend’s death.
Losing someone you love is a horrible experience, but even that tragedy can be worsened by stress, and if your Jim Carrey, then you have to deal with legal action.
Jim Carrey has been the subject of a wrongful death lawsuit from Cathriona White’s husband, Mark Burton, who claims that Carrey unlawfully obtained the prescription drugs that White used to kill herself. Rather than staying quiet about the accusation, E! reports that Carrey made a public statement in his defense:
“What a terrible shame. It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world. I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat’s troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone’s control. I really hope that some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace.”
E! consulted a legal adviser to understand what a wrongful death lawsuit means for Carrey:
“Even if Jim Carrey loses this lawsuit, he does not face any jail time arising out of this civil litigation. Because the courts are so backlogged in the county of Los Angeles, it takes at least three years for a civil lawsuit to proceed to a jury trial. To prevail in this civil wrongful death lawsuit, the plaintiff must prove that Jim Carrey was the ‘proximate cause’ of this woman’s death… In order for the police to investigate Jim Carrey on this matter, they have to believe that, one, a crime occurred and, two, Carrey likely committed the crime.”
What do you think of Jim Carrey’s decision to fight this in court?
