AI Creator Behind Tilly Norwood Launches New History Channel Series

Takeaways

  • Particle6 unveils a new AI-powered history series for The History Channel Netherlands.
  • The show blends live-action and AI-generated scenes to recreate iconic Dutch streets from centuries past.
  • The creator behind controversial AI character Tilly Norwood says the new project reflects a long-term strategy in AI-driven storytelling.

A New AI-Driven History Series Is Coming to The History Channel

Particle6, the U.K.-based production company known for its viral AI character Tilly Norwood, has secured a new commission from Hearst Networks. Their latest project, โ€œStraten van Toenโ€ (โ€œStreets of the Pastโ€), is a 10-episode short-form history series produced exclusively for The History Channel in the Netherlands.

The series marks one of Particle6โ€™s biggest steps yet into on-screen AI productionโ€”blending advanced AI visuals with traditional documentary storytelling.

A Historical Investigator Travels Back in Time with AI

The show follows Corjan Molโ€”historical investigator, author, and reality TV figure known from The Curse of Oak Islandโ€”as he explores some of the Netherlandsโ€™ most iconic streets, squares, and canal-side locations.

Each episode begins with Mol standing in the modern-day version of a historic Dutch street. As he narrates the story behind the location, AI recreates the past, transporting him into immersive scenes where he appears in cameo roles.

  • Rokin, Amsterdam โ€“ Now a major shopping area, but once home to the worldโ€™s first stock exchange in the 1600s.
  • Janskerkhof, Utrecht โ€“ Today a bustling student square and flower market, but during WWII it served as a hub of Dutch Resistance activity.

These AI-generated sequences rely on archival materialsโ€”historic paintings, engravings, and early photographsโ€”to ensure accuracy. The production blends real historical figures with narrative characters created to illustrate key facts and events.

Particle6 on AI as a Creative Partner

Eline van der Velden, Founder and CEO of Particle6, explained that while the company has previously used AI for research and post-production, this is their first project where AI plays a major on-screen role.

โ€œAI has proved the perfect creative partner,โ€ said Van der Velden. โ€œIt allows us to seamlessly combine modern live-action footage with AI-generated scenes from the same locations in the past, producing cinematic images that could shape the future of history programming.โ€

She noted that the technology enables the team to recreate historical environments with enhanced detail, offering audiences a new way to experience local history.

Addressing the Tilly Norwood Controversy

Earlier this month, Van der Velden spoke with Variety about the controversy surrounding Particle6โ€™s AI character Tilly Norwood, which sparked backlash after she suggested the AI persona might sign with a talent agency.

Despite the reaction, Van der Velden emphasized that the project wasnโ€™t intended as a stunt:

โ€œI didnโ€™t think it was controversial,โ€ she said, explaining that Norwood is part of a broader, successful business strategy focused on AI storytelling.

This new History Channel commission reinforces Particle6โ€™s commitment to using AI as a legitimate filmmaking toolโ€”not just a viral experiment.

Why This Matters for the Entertainment Industry

As AI becomes a larger part of production workflowsโ€”from previs to post-productionโ€”series like Straten van Toen show how technology can enhance storytelling rather than replace it. The blend of archival authenticity and AI-driven visuals could unlock new opportunities for educational content, documentaries, and scripted series.

For actors, creators, and entertainment professionals, AI-powered productions are also opening doors to new kinds of roles, hybrid performance techniques, and innovative formats that combine live footage with AI-generated environments.
