How to Get Tax Incentives to Pay for Your Documentary

Date:

Want to get paid for your documentary?

It's pretty clear that there are and financial kickbacks available around the world to filmmakers. For example, you can recoup 50% of your production budget if you film your film in Fiji.

But, what about making a documentary? Recently, the Institute has just released a downloadable, state-by-state guide to tax incentives for which documentaries qualify. For example, several states offer tax credits of up to 30% for films with budgets as low as $50,00.

Rahdi Taylor, Director of Sundance's Documentary Film Fund, describes the resource as “a guide to public funds from US state incentives that can help you potentially fund your next documentary .”

In addition to an interactive map and the at-a-glance below, the PDF also provides a list of questions you should ask yourself when investigating these opportunities for your film, such as:

“What are the expenses related to using the (professional bookkeeping,  audit by CPA preferred in that state)?”
