Jimmy Kimmel Says He Learned His Show Was Pulled While in the Bathroom

Date:

The audience booed at the story, to which Kimmel quipped, “That’s what I said! I started booing too.”

Shock and Uncertainty

Kimmel admitted that he initially thought the cancellation was permanent.

“I thought, that’s it. It’s over. I’m never coming back on the air,” he told Colbert.

At the time, Jimmy Kimmel Live! had a full studio audience already seated and booked guests ready to go — including celebrity chef Christian Petroni and a taped performance by Howard Jones. Ironically, Jones’ chosen song was “Things Can Only Get Better.”

Why the Show Was Pulled

The suspension followed Kimmel’s Sept. 15 monologue, where he criticized right-wing media’s reaction to the murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. His remarks, paired with political commentary on then-President Donald Trump, prompted pushback from affiliates.

In a statement, ABC said the show would go on pause “indefinitely.” Nexstar Media and Sinclair, both major owners of ABC affiliates, announced they would replace Jimmy Kimmel Live! with news programming.

The move came shortly after Nexstar’s $6.2 billion acquisition of Tegna, expanding its control to over 80% of U.S. TV households—pending FCC approval.

Hollywood Rallies Behind Kimmel

The decision sparked outrage across Hollywood. More than 400 celebrities signed an open letter defending Kimmel’s right to free speech, with support from Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Jon Stewart, John Oliver, Conan O’Brien, David Letterman, Howard Stern, and The View co-hosts.

“Never imagined I’d be in a situation like this,” Kimmel later said in an emotional monologue, calling out political interference in late-night television.

The Return of Jimmy Kimmel Live!

By Sept. 22, Disney confirmed the show would return. Nexstar and Sinclair both ended their preemptions after receiving “thoughtful feedback from viewers, advertisers, and community leaders.”

On Sept. 23, Jimmy Kimmel Live! officially returned to the air nationwide, resuming its place in late-night television.

What This Means for Entertainment Professionals

The controversy surrounding Kimmel highlights the delicate balance between creative freedom and network control in the entertainment industry. For actors, comedians, and producers, it’s a reminder that:

  • Content can carry political consequences. Creative voices in entertainment often intersect with social commentary.
  • Networks weigh business and audience pressure. Affiliate groups and advertisers hold significant influence.
  • Public support matters. Hollywood solidarity played a role in pushing networks to reinstate the show.

Final Thoughts

Jimmy Kimmel’s bathroom anecdote is more than just a funny late-night story—it underscores the fragility of free expression in television and the power of industry voices rallying together. With Jimmy Kimmel Live! back on the air, it remains to be seen how late-night hosts will continue navigating the shifting landscape of political commentary and entertainment.
