‘Outer Range’ Canceled by Amazon After Two Seasons

Josh Brolin starred in the Western-sci-fi hybrid series.

Prime Video has decided not to renew Outer Range for a third season. The series, which uniquely combined Western and sci-fi genres, has been canceled just two months after the premiere of its second season.

Outer Range featured Josh Brolin as a Wyoming rancher who stumbles upon a mysterious black void on his land while battling to protect his property from a rival family. The ensemble cast also included Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, Tamara Podemski, Lewis Pullman, Tom Pelphrey, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, Isabel Arraiza, Olive Abercrombie, and Will Patton.

The series debuted on Prime Video in April 2022 and was quickly renewed for a second season in October the same year. However, the show saw a change in leadership at that time, with Charles Murray stepping in as showrunner, replacing Zev Borow.

While Outer Range did not reach the popularity of Prime Video hits like Fallout and Reacher, it held its own in terms of viewership. The first season remained in Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series for five weeks, and the second season made the chart for three weeks as of June 2, according to the most recent available data.

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Plan B Entertainment, the show had Murray as an executive producer for its second season alongside Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Ernest McNealey from Plan B, as well as Brolin, Tony Krantz, Heather Rae, and Jon Paré.
